Chapter Twelve

Natasha

I wake up alone, my mind bleary from the events of yesterday. I sit up, my head spinning for a moment before I adjust.

“Hello?” I call, but there’s no response. I stand up, exiting Eve’s familiar bedroom to the living room. Anderson is asleep on the couch, but there’s nobody else here. I decide that I’d rather not wait for things to happen. I grab my car keys and exit the apartment, turning my car on while I make a phone call.

The business card that Thompson received from the witch at the party was on Eve’s desk, and I managed to snag it earlier without anyone noticing. I dial the number, then wait.

“Natasha Watson, I’ve been expecting your call,” says a voice over the phone. I shiver.

“How do you know me?” I ask.

She lets out a breathy laugh, and I startle when someone knocks on the passenger side window of my car. I drop my phone and turn to look over.

A blonde woman whose face looks like she was just dropped out of Vogue is standing there, an eyebrow pricked. I hastily click the unlock button.

She climbs in.

“So nice of you to call,” she says, her voice a low purr. My skin tingles and itches, and nausea rolls through me.

“How did you get here?” I ask. Perhaps she was already here, but that doesn’t explain how she knows me specifically.

She laughs, the sound musical. It may sound pleasant to some, but to me, it’s like a knife scraping against a plate. Her presence alone is enough for me to be totally uneasy. “We should get Starbucks,” she says.

My hands shake, and I don’t move. “Why are you in my car?”

Angela frowns. “Let’s go out for coffee. Then we’ll talk.” She looks toward the pack’s building. “I can’t stand the stench of wolf.”

I don’t reply to the snide comment. It’s like my body is trying to protect me, so I don’t say anything. Every nerve in me is screaming Danger! about this woman.

Still, I pull out of the parking garage, pulling into the nearest Starbucks parking lot. Angela and I walk inside, and I’m on edge the whole time, searching for a way to escape. She wouldn’t attack me in public, would she?

I’m being ridiculous. I’ve met plenty of paranormals, and not one of them tried to harm me. I have no reason to distrust Angela, but for some reason, I do.

“What would you like?” Angela asks. “Anything you want. It’s on me.”

I just order a hot chocolate, and she rolls her eyes. I follow her to a table in the corner, and she smiles over her drink. She looks like a basic white girl with her ugg boots and loose cardigan, but there’s something deep and dark inside her.

“I think you would make an excellent addition to St. Louis United Covens,” she says without preamble.

I frown. This is not where I expected this conversation to go. I was the one to call Angela, but I regretted it the moment I hit the green button.
